About My Girlfriend's ClosetMy Girlfriend's Closet is run by a dedicated group of San Diego mothers and their teen daughters. Our organization's mother- daughter shared-responsibility, shared decision-making structure also has a secondary objective: to teach tomorrow's young community leaders how to effectively build and operate a volunteer-based nonprofit organization for the benefit of the community.
My Girlfriend's Closet provides clothing to any San Diego-area teen girl who needs it. We strive to reach the teens whose need is greatest - the homeless and those in foster care - by working closely with the social service agencies that serve them. Additional disadvantaged teens are identified and notified about our clothing distribution events by community organizations that aid them and their families. No one is turned away.
My Girlfriend's Closet is a San Diego-based nonprofit organization that collects quality, gently used clothing from teen girls in the greater San Diego area who can afford quality clothing and distributes it to teen girls who are homeless, in foster care, or otherwise economically disadvantaged. By offering stylish clothing free, in a pleasant, boutique-like "shopping" environment, we provide a unique wardrobe resource that aims at helping these girls feel more self-confident and comfortable in their schools and communities.
The founders knew that most teen girls in middle to upper-middle class families have plenty of stylish clothing to wear. They also love to explore each other's closets and lend and borrow clothes. Often they find themselves with considerable quantities of barely used clothing that either no longer fits or that they no longer wear. The organization's name, My Girlfriend's Closet, was chosen to reflect the desire of the founding teens to share their gently used clothing with underprivileged girls their own age - just as they do with their girlfriends. The organization's structure was designed to include and, in fact, depend upon the active participation and shared decision-making of the teen volunteers, thus fulfilling another objective: to teach tomorrow's young community leaders how to initiate and effectively run a nonprofit organization for the benefit of the community.
My Girlfriend's Closet is operated by a team of dedicated volunteers, and managed by this Board of Directors.
Q&A | My Girlfriend’s ClosetSignOnSanDiego, Thursday, December 31, 2009
The nonprofit My Girlfriend’s Closet has donated thousands of gently used outfits to girls in homeless shelters and foster care programs across the county since the group was formed nearly five years ago. Donations come from service organizations, sororities and individuals, many of whom raid their own closets for outfits they no longer want but think someone else might. Not just any clothes get passed on. The high school girls involved in the program — mostly from upscale neighborhoods — screen each donated pair of pants, skirts, shoes, sweaters and jackets. We recently asked high school student Nikki Ouellette, one of the teens originally active in the group, about the nonprofit. QUESTION: How did you get involved in My Girlfriend’s Closet? QUESTION: What are the biggest challenges? QUESTION: Can you detail the last event? Any events coming up? Our next sorting event is Jan. 17. We bring all the clothing that we have collected and with a group of volunteers (about 115 girls and moms) we sort through the clothing, putting it in sizes — small, medium and large — and separating the shoes and accessories. We also separate smaller clothing that we call “little sisters” clothing and we donate those clothes to another organization. Our next distribution event, which is only open to girls invited through social service organizations in San Diego County, is Feb. 20. QUESTION: How many people are involved? QUESTION: How many clothes have been given away since My Girlfriend’s Closet began? My Girlfriend's Closet received 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization status in May 2006. |
